The original panel has been shaved down and glued to a modern (20th Century), uncradled, wooden support, probably because of warping and splitting in the original pine panel the vertical splits, now retouched, can readily be seen at around 2 in. from either margin, and either side of the saints head. The transfer to a modern support accounts for the trimming of the original panel, which in reduced form is let into the modern one, rather than the additions being glued accretions to the trimmed edges. It also appears to have lost a few centimetres of the original panel at the bottom, where the saint's foot is cut off. The surface is otherwise fairly clean and the varnish only slightly discoloured. Discoloured retouching is visible in the blue visible through the right-most window and further scattered retouchings in the background are made visible under ultraviolet light. The figure of the saint, however, appears to remain largely untouched. The painting presents well in its current state and is in fairly good overall condition, notwithstanding previous intervention.
